CONSUMER PROTECTION BOARD HAILS ENACTMENT OF THE
CHILDREN’S PRODUCT SAFETY AND RECALL EFFECTIVENESS ACT OF 2008
STATEMENT FROM MINDY A. BOCKSTEIN
CHAIRPERSON AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE
NYS CONSUMER PROTECTION BOARD

The New York State Consumer Protection Board hails Governor Paterson for enacting the Children’s Product Safety and Recall Effectiveness Act of 2008. In signing this law, the Governor is going a long way towards protecting New York children from unsafe toys and durable juvenile products which may be available to consumers even after they have been recalled. Recalled items, which all too often remain in homes and on store shelves where they continue to pose a danger to unsuspecting users, have for too long exposed children to needless hazards. Through this law, parents will get more information about the toys they wish to buy before the toy is purchased and benefit from more prominent notice if the product is recalled. Retailers will also get notice from manufacturers and will be required to remove recalled toys and children’s products from store shelves, making shopping safer for all of us. The CPB continues to monitor recall compliance and stands ready to work with retailers, toy manufactures, child advocates and others to implement and enforce these requirements.

Together with our friends in the Legislature, Governor Paterson is assuring that the trust placed in products we buy for our children is warranted.
